Age: 22
Weight: 245
Height: 5'5
Do you smoke tobacco? No
Where are you from? What country? US

Did you have a pregnancy test? Yes (3!)
When was it taken? 1 week after missed period
What was the result. Positive, all 3 times...

How was the pregnancy ended? A miscarriage was diagnosed and a D&C was performed to evacuate the tissue

Were you successful in using the herbs? I firmly believe I was, but of course the MD's don't think so.... everything was going well at my first visit and upon use of the herbs, my progress declined substantially.

Would you try herbs again, or recommend them to a friend in the same situation? Yes!

Is there anything that clued you in that the herbs might be working before bleeding started? tight abdominal muscles, back pain, some spotting

Is this your first pregnancy? no, I have had one pregnancy which resulted in a natural birth

What was the date of the first day of your last menstrual period? 2/7/2004
Do you know the date of fertilizing intercourse? What was it? 3/13/2004
What was the date you were expecting menstruation? Unsure
How long do your cycles usually run? does it vary? varies
Do you cycle regularly or irregularly? regularly, (I am on birth control to regulate... I was really surprised to find out I was pregnant...)

What was the date when the herbs were started? 3/22/2004
How many weeks pregnant were you when the herbs were started? according to ultrasound, appx. 2-3 weeks
For how many days were the herbs used (total)? 5

What was the date the pregnancy was terminated? bleeding began on the 4th day, the D&C was performed appx. 1 week later

Were you using birth control? Yes
What kind/method of birth control/contraception were you using? oral contraceptive (ortho tri-cylcen)
Do you know how/why it failed? antibiotic treatment for illness

Did you experience any symptoms or signs of pregnancy? breast tenderness, nausea, dizziness
When did they start? appx. 1 week before missed period

++++++ I took this combination of herbs every 4 hours non-stop. I even set an alarm to make sure I woke up to take my dosage during the night. The dosages below were supplemented by Vitamin C (as ascorbic acid, make sure it doesn't include rosehips or any other ingredient that may promote a healthy pregnancy... Vitamin C in low doses can be helpful but in high doses it causes the placenta to stop nourishing the fetus.)

The Vitamin C was taken in tablet form, 500 mg every 2 hours with the exception of night doses. I only took the vitamin C when I woke to take the other herbs. Dong Guai (tincture) 12-15 drops every 4 hours, Black Cohosh (tincture), 16-18 drops every 4 hours

Side effects. no side effects were experienced with the exception of nausea from the HORRIBLE taste of the liquid herbs.

How did the herbs affect you? I was somewhat discouraged to find that I had no noticeable affect on my body. I guess I was expecting some dramatic change that occurred in my body overnight.... but instead it was a gradual silent change that I was unaware of.

Any positive effects? I wouldn't say that anything positive occurred, other than the termination of the pregnancy

Where there any negative effects? HORRIBLE HORRIBLE TASTE. I would recommend capsules to anyone considering this method. I'm not sure but my I assumed that the liquid form would be more effective than pill form, but I could be wrong. If there is no difference in the effectiveness, there is no way I would have chosen the liquid over the pills.

Do you have any health problems or issues? No

How did the herbs make you feel physically? I experienced some fatigue and irritability but this could also be contributed to the pregnancy or the mental affects of undertaking such a feat on my own..... It's hard to say.

How did being pregnant make you feel physically? other than breast tenderness, nausea, etc. it was too early to experience any other symptoms.

If the herbs caused miscarriage -- how did you feel just before bleeding began? And when bleeding started - How was the bleeding, cramping, etc.? Many women would like to know more about this part. If you can describe what it was like for you it would be helpful.

I knew there was something happening the evening of the 3rd day but I didn't know what and I was very anxious find out. I began feeling extremely tired, the lower back pain was worse than before I was experiencing what I would compare to Braxton Hicks contractions, similar to the real labor contractions only painless. My abdomen went through a series of tightening/relaxing which was my first indication that something was about to occur. I got a tremendous headache and felt very tired.

The next morning (start of 4 day of herbal treatment) when I went to shower, there was some spotting. I was elated at first but disappointed to find that no more bleeding occurred. More spotting was noticed the evening of the 4th night and on the 5th morning, I was spotting more heavily. I scheduled an appt. with my OB/GYN who declared a miscarriage and scheduled the D&C.

Your Story -

I had just received a major promotion, separated from my partner of 2 years and signed a contract on a new home. The pregnancy came at a time that could not have been more wrong. I have a wonderful relationship with my daughter and felt like she needed me more now than ever. I carefully weighed my options and came to the conclusion that now was not a good time. I strongly believe that one must be in touch with her own body and be comfortable with your decision first for the herbal abortion to be successful. If you are unsure of your choice, your body will sense that and try to counteract your attempts. (or at least I feel this way...) I called around to several clinics in my area (Atlanta, GA) and was terrified to find that many clinics simply would not do the abortion due to my weight. I weigh 245 lbs and to many clinics, this was a major risk. Others would perform the procedure but for an increased fee (upwards of $5-600 dollars...) which was not an option.

Seeing that I could not even afford an abortion, much less a new baby, I looked to the Internet for help. I searched for hours, and determined that an herbal abortion seemed to be a safe, somewhat effective way to deal with my situation. I went to a herb & vitamin shop in my town and purchased Dong Guai, Black Cohosh and Vitamin C. I took 12-15 drops of Dong Guai and 15-18 drops of Black Cohosh every 4 hours with regular wake up calls at night so that I would not miss a dose. I also took Vitamin C tablets (500 mg) every 2 hours. The dosing was monotonous and the taste was horrible. There were no real measurable effects so I was discouraged at first. The horrible taste, the twice-a-night wake up calls and the mental anguish of dealing with the whole situation was almost enough to cause me to give up.

It is very important not to quit too soon, as I almost did. When the bleeding started, I continued the herbs until I had a D&C performed by my OB/GYN. I was afraid to stop and subsequently reverse the process. I strongly believe that the herbs were effective mixed with my will to naturally abort. Looking back, I know that early intervention, the determination to succeed and the right mixture of herbs was the key to completing the process. Thank you so much, Sister Zeus, for your dedication to helping women help themselves.

Erin.
