Speaking Out!

This is a safe place where we can share those little talked about abortion experiences.

This was my third menstrual extraction, it was the first menstrual extraction our self-help group did under the guidance of our mentor. A Menstrual Extraction is a technique that can be used to physically remove a fertilized egg form the uterus. It is a very safe procedure that is done in the safe comfortable environment of your own home, or someone else's. It is not done by doctors and nurses. It is done early in the pregnancy, and can be done as early as the day your period is due. It requires knowledge, training and experience to be done correctly and safely. It is not something that you can do on yourself, physically it is not possible.

My third Menstrual Extraction was done on Day 38 of my cycle (Day 1 is the first day of my last period). My period was 10 days late. Before the ME I took 6 grams of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) a day, starting on Day 30, period was two days late. On Day 31, I noticed some tenderness in my breasts. On Day 35, I stopped taking the vitamin C. [Taking 6-10 grams of ascorbic acid a day for 5-10 days is suppose to bring on menstruation delayed due to pregnancy. For more info.]

Three days later we did a Menstrual Extraction. It was physically easier for me this time, I believe because it was earlier in the pregnancy than the first two. It lasted for about an hour, we went at my pace. I experienced pretty intense cramping during the procedure. My body was involuntarily tense, my legs would tremble and I would shiver. I would go hot and cold, but mostly cold, being so tense, I don't think my blood was circulating well. I took some Bach's Rescue Remedy which helped some.

Emotionally I was not attached. I felt like I've been through this before, and it was not big deal. I took the blood and tissue into the woods and found a distinctive tree, knelt at it's base and poured the contents of the jar into the earth. I sat for a few minutes to say farewell and left, and have not been back since. I've always lived my life looking forward rather than looking back, second guessing the choices I made. I know what I want and have never had any second thoughts ending any of my pregnancies. I did what was right for me. And right by the children I didn't have, its not fair to a potential child, to not be devoted to them. And I'm thankful, that I don't have to deal with the man who would have been their father.

I bled for 10 days after the ME, passing some blood clots and tissue, then the bleeding slowed to a trickle.

I was so detached from my body and the pregnancy that I wasn't being very careful. Forgetting the warning of our mentor, that I could ovulate unexpectantly. On Day 10 I stopped bleeding, Day 11 I had unprotected sex, not expecting to ovulate so soon after bleeding. That was my mistake, my body must have gotten right back on track and I ovulated at the usual time 14 days or so after the termination of pregnancy by menstrual extraction. The next day we started using protection. But on Day 11, the sperm got in there and days later fertilized the egg. So I was pregnant again, the second month in a row.

Major bummer. I tried using herbs with out success and with the help of ladies from my self-help group we terminated the pregnancy with yet another menstrual extraction, and that is a story for another time.
